Cats Love Wheatgrass
It seems that I've got a few who are surprised that cats eat grass. Well, don't be! Mrs W, a fantastic friend of mine who has dedicated her life to the cats, grows pots and pots of wheatgrass for her cats to chew on. Fivecats told me before that her Boy likes a particular species of grass that grows wild on open fields.
H, another good friend of mine, goes for walks to look for a special kind of plant that grows on the sandy soils beside tarmac roads. I've seen how her cat went gaga over it; Sniffing and chewing the roots, rubbing his face with the leaves and rolling on the floor in a state of daze. The happy cat was so intoxicated, he had drool dribbling down his chin all the way to his chest!
A few weeks ago, Mikan gave me a scare when he was hooked onto chewing the dried flowers. I guess it says that there's insufficient roughage in their current diet. Also, these guys are indoors 24/7 so a few of them derive pleasure from continuous snacking. I'm counting on the grass to give them an alternative something to chew on, hopefully my fat ones (Becksie, Princess, Maggie) can lose some weight!

FiveCatsMom,
I got them from NTUC at $2.50 a packet, vege section. Thou it is cut grass, it lasts for days if you keep it refrigerated. Just rem to leave it in a plastic bag to retain moisture. A pack can last me more than a week.
I'm thinking of planting some my own but it sounds like an awful lot of work. (Lazy cat mom here) Hmm.. Thinking of planting, your backyard is quite ideal for a pasture! :D

Elven,
It's nice of you to care for the ones who need help and your dad to allow it. :) Are you doing rescue work on your own?
I too used to think that animals eat grass to cure themselves of sickness! That's what my mom told me anyway. Heehee.

Thanks Mini. Will go raid NTUC for some wheat grass for the kids.

I don't bring strays home to keep, neither do I feed them. But on hot days, when I come home from school in the afternoon, I try to keep some water leftover in my bottle so I can feed to whichever kitty I see wandering at my void deck.
They are smart. When they want water, they are gentle sweet and loving. The very next day, without thirst or hunger, they either ignore you or try to bite and scratch you. CAts aren't as mercenary as we thought.

Heh. I usually don't see the cats out in the day in my area though. They only come out at night.
Nothing beats clean, cool water on hot afternoons! :D

I get my weed from NTUC as well.
SOP's that I give them some of it, repackage the rest in newspaper, dump them (the grass, not the cats) in the fridge, & promptly forget about them.
Until my mom smacks me in the head 2 weeks later (that's when they liquidate).
So nowadays I just give them the whole lot.
Tried growing my own, but it always ends up messy, so bugger it.

Liquidate?! Yuck.
But my guys can't finish the whole lot in one go and the grass wither so quickly. Will they still eat it after the grass has withered?
I remembered once I gave them too much, I had to chew on some as well to help finish up.
